Much of life – like table tennis – is about quick reflexes, strategic moves, and the occasional unexpected spin. For Keanu Ward, a proud “Bloemie”, these principles have subconsciously guided him both on and off the ‘court’. Growing up in a close-knit family, Keanu’s days revolved around his parents’ tuckshop and his brother’s swimming galas, creating a strong foundation of family bonds and teamwork.
His father, a businessman with dreams of becoming a magistrate, greatly influenced Keanu’s path. The passion for law was passed down from father to son, with Keanu deciding early on that he wanted to pursue an LLB degree. His journey led him to the University of the Free State, where he became a dedicated “Kovsie.” At UFS, Keanu not only excelled in his studies but also represented Veritas and Kovsies in table tennis, demonstrating his competitive spirit and love for the game.
Keanu’s brother, an IR Specialist, further inspired his focus on labour law. Their discussions and his brother’s passion for the field drew Keanu into the world of dispute resolution. This passion eventually led him to the Consolidated Employers’ Organisation (CEO). Despite an initial unsuccessful interview, Keanu’s persistence paid off, and he secured a position in Kimberley. He likens the team at CEO to the Springboks – united in their pursuit of success and always ready for a match point.
Keanu’s friends would describe him as friendly, humorous, and straightforward – the kind of person who can lighten up a room with a joke but also calls a spade a spade (or a paddle a paddle?). His proudest accomplishment is obtaining his LLB degree, a testament to his hard work and determination. Looking ahead, Keanu envisions completing his LLM in Labour Law and investing in property to generate passive income.
In his leisure time, Keanu’s love for table tennis continues to shine. He can play the sport all day, reminiscing about skipping classes to play at varsity. Besides being active, he enjoys a good movie and relishes delicious meals from his favourite restaurants, with Kalahari. Fish’s Fantastic Four and Longhorn Steakhouse’s T-Bone steak topping the list.
Keanu’s story is a delightful mix of legal aspirations and a fervent love for table tennis, showcasing his dedication to both his profession and his passions.
