Dear CEO Members
With regards to the implementation of the Temporary Relief Scheme for Employers/Employees in March 2020, please take note of the following. On the 08th of May 2020, the spokesperson for the Minister of Employment and Labour, Teboho Thejane, had stated that the Minister, Mr Thulas Nxesi, had voiced his concerns about employers who have received Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) Covid-19 Temporary Employer/Employee Relief Scheme benefits from the UIF, but still failed to pay the employees accordingly and timeously.
Following that, the spokesperson had mentioned that the Minister of Labour and Employment had described this practice as “callous and insensitive to the needs of workers, especially when many people are facing financial distress due to the Coronavirus pandemic during the lockdown and reiterated that employers who are withholding funds meant for workers must immediately release payments.”
The Unemployment Insurance Fund further stated that numerous complaints had been received from employees alleging that the employers are failing to pay them their benefits despite the funds being received by the employer. The department mentioned that the UIF system had been upgraded to allow employees to check the status of their claims submitted by their employers using their identification number as a reference.
Please be advised that the full list of all companies paid by the UIF is also available and anyone can log on to their website www.uifecc.labour.gov.za/covid19 or reach the UIF on the toll-free number 0800 030 007.
